I like to get close (real close) to the action, but I’m not a huge fan of long lenses. I also like beer. So throw a stationary bike race in the back of bar and I will be there. I made this photo last night at East River Bar during the prize party for the Escape From New York Ride.

I own many cameras. Two are digital, the rest are film. The film cameras usually all have a rolls of film in them. They sit around in a bag or on a shelf waiting for their turn, the film inside often becoming a long record of things I would have otherwise forgotten. Developing a roll is like walking into a surprise party. I love this process. This roll has been in my Nikon FM-10 (yes, I still own and use my first manual camera) for a long time. I’m sending it off to a good friend who is living and working in Moab and is without a camera, so I finished off the roll and processed it. This one is my favorite from the roll.

I’ll post a link here when that happens, but in the mean time, I couldn’t resist shooting and processing a few test rolls.

I was in Boise a couple weeks ago on the first day of the city’s Bike Week. Most of the events were scheduled after my departure, but I was able to make it to the vintage bike swap, held in a Rite Aid parking lot. The “fixie” craze has hit Boise, but it seemed to have missed the swap. Lots of rust and chrome; mostly vintage cruisers and parts filled the lot. My friends from the Classic Riders, would have been in heaven. I made these photos on expired Fuji Superia film.

A few people have asked lately, and some are a bit confused, so it’s time to go into a bit more detail about the book I am working on. Yep, I’ve been photographing The City’s bike community for years. But BIKE NYC is not just a photo book. It’s your definitive guide to cycling and bicycle culture in New York City. Part guidebook, photo gallery, history and human-interest story, BIKE NYC takes you on virtual bike rides through all five boroughs and beyond. Imagine a book you’ll read cover to cover during your flight to NYC then keep in your backpack for reference as you pedal a rental (or your own!) bike up the Hudson River Greenway to the Cloisters during the height of the fall foliage change. Imagine a book full of compelling photos and stories gleaned from random bikers and icons of The City’s bicycle community. Imagine a book any bike-minded visitor, recent transplant or native will want to own and ride along with.

The book is being researched, written and photographed by award-winning author, Marci Blackman, eminent New York bike culture photographer, me, and Bikeblognyc journalist and filmmaker, Michael Green. It will be released in 2011, by Skyhorse Publishing.

I can’t thank our agent (and my wife to be!) Amy Tipton enough for making this happen. She helped us flesh out the book from the start and found us a publisher in a New York minute. I’m proud to join the chorus of clients who sing her praise. Amy is fierce!

I was very happy to get a full page in the mag! Check it out here.
